3-19-19 natural gas in fdl storm sewer

Some Fond du lac residents were evacuated Monday afternoon after natural gas was detected in the storm sewer system.  Fond du Lac Fire Chief Pete O’Leary says the high natural gas readings were detected in a neighborhood on South Park Avenue.  “Its not totally uncommon, it happens every now and again,” O’Leary told WFDL news on the scene.  “What’s dangerous though is it (natural gas) tries to seek its highest point and its in the sewer system if it were to ignite it would be catastrophic.”   South Park between 15th and Boyd Street was blocked to traffic and Alliant Energy was called to the scene.  Power was shut off to about 100 homes.  Crews were on the scene for several hours until Alliant was able to find the source of the leak.  The leak has been stopped and Alliant continues to make repairs.  That portion of Park Avenue remains closed.
