3-1-16 sturgeon spearing

OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) — This year’s sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes comes to a close with about one-third of the fish that were harvested last year.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says 703 sturgeon were taken this season, which came to a close Sunday. That’s down from about 2,160 speared last year.  DNR sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says a mild winter and heavy rain in December reduced the clarity of the water, making it more difficult to spear. Koenigs says considering those factors, it’s great that spearers caught as many as they did.
