2-2-16 senate majority leaders wants to ban county executives from serving in legislature

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has introduced a bill that would bar county executives from serving simultaneously in the Legislature. The bill comes as Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris, a Democrat, is gearing up to run for Republican Sen. Rick Gudex’s open Senate seat. Gudex isn’t seeking re-election.  Fitzgerald said in a telephone interview that it’s not right for someone to make six figures as county executive as well as another $50,000 for serving as a senator. Harris makes $102,834 a year as county executive.  Harris said in a telephone interview the bill is clearly aimed at him. Fitzgerald gave legislators until the end of the day Wednesday to sign onto the bill as co-sponsors, a signal that he wants the proposal to move quickly.
